Rhino Gas Mask: Adding the Trim

Today I added leather trim around the eyepieces and the intake port. I also finished putting in all the rivets. I am leaning heavily toward going with the rhino look, by making the nasal exhaust vent "hornish" looking. That way it will pair nicely with Pachydermos.

  2. The rivets make for an interesting contrast from the organic nature of the leather. Looks like a lot of work, too! It uses a bit more leather than hand-sewing, I assume.

    Can't wait to see more.

  3. Handstitching one of these is a lot of work, and so the riveting is less. More expense though. I always like trying new ideas, and I thought that lots of rivets would work well in the intensity that a gas mask naturally has. The horned nose willl bring a bit of humor to it, and thus soften its look.

  4. I have used rivets a lot not so much for decorations, but there are these items called domes, which would add a unique bumpy effect if that was something you were looking for. Oh another question, is there a way that I myself can post a picture in these comments? If not, its not a big deal.

  5. Paul, I don't know of any way for you to post a picture. While the rivets are decorative, they are also functional. Each one is placed to hold two pieces of leather together. I am familiar with the domes, and yes that could create a very nice look. It would get pricey however if I used too many. Plus I shy away from commerical findings whenever possible, to keep my look unique.
