Dr. Beulenpest: Mask is Complete

Here is the finished steampunk plague doctor mask. I made the straps so that it is adjustable to fit any adult head, and the lenses are dark enough to keep others from seeing in, but allowing the wearer to easily see out.

Hope you like it (although I have to wonder why none of the five posts on this mask has received a single comment)!

  2. Tom,
I had to smile a bit at your parenthetical question; I've been following this from the very beginning and I have been eagerly checking Google Reader for an update as I follow this by RSS.

Anyway, it's a neat coincidence that you bring this up, because just this morning I was showing the last post to my oldest son. He was blown away and indeed, inspired as I have been and I think you have a new fan.

I truly appreciate the portal to your creative processes. In fact, it has helped me organize my own thoughts as I struggle to get started with working with leather. I now have a much better picture of how certain things can be accomplished. The fact that you have posted all of the photos and given your account of what is happening is of incredible value to many who are interested in the steampunk genre and leather work in general.

I am a member of DeviantArt and too often I see work from people who slap a watch gear onto something and call it 'steampunk'. Yikes! I resist thumbing my nose at them and telling them to visit your web site and DeviantArt pages, although maybe I shouldn't.

I really liked your version of the plague mask, and seeing your incarnation of Dr. Beulenpest's mask is a real treat. Other than the 'Sentinel', I would have to say this is my next favourite piece of your work. Yes, I love it even more than the mask I have of yours. :)

By the way, the Beulenpest mask plus the top hat is a great combination, although my son thinks the combo of the mask and hooded cape is better.

    Great stuff, Tom.

  3. I too have been following your progress on this mask. As for no posts... it's difficult to comment on something that leaves you speechless. Your work is simply outstanding.

  6. Like that it matches the top hat :-)

P.S. you gotta give us space between posts for comments! Its not our fault you felt the need to build the full thing in like...a weekend ;-)

  7. Silenced in awe ;)
Really interesting treatment of the 'plague doctor' idea - first one I've seen that I actually like! Lengthening it from your original sketch worked well, it looks very raven-esque now. I love the sinister smile the seam makes...

  8. Personally I love the mask except the lens area, I think a Doctor would prefer to have as much visual imput as possible and by making the lenses have a more tubular mount than the previous version I think you loose some of this.
A shallower version but keeping the dark tint would I think have been better, or possibly a more sperical lens giving a bug eyed effect

  9. Thanks everyone!
Errant, glad you saw the smile. I wasn't sure if it would come across.
David, the deeper lens is telescopic, so the Dr. can see close up.

  10. Awesome and it was great seeing it develop from the sketch to finished article.

  11. Not sure if I missed it in your explanation but how exactly did you tint the lens?

I am creating a paper mache mask plague doctor mask with only the lenses left to go!

  12. The lenses were cut out of acrylic sheet that was the tinted color, similar to dark glasses.

  13. Do you order your tinted acrylic locally or online? I'd love to order some for my projects similar to this!

    Awesome work btw!

  15. Which product do you purchase from that site specifically?

  16. I phone them and ask for 1/8" thick acrylic sheet that is translucent gray. Tell them you want it like dark glasses. I don't know the part #.

It's definitely touching perfectness what you create and it's cool to see that you can handle both leather and metals very well in a inventive way. A true artist! :)
